The air is clear the day is fine, And swiftly, swiftly flows the time, The boat is floating on the tide, That wafts me off from Fiunary. We must up and haste away, We must up and haste away, We must up and haste away, Fareweel, fareweel tae Fiunary. A thousand, thousand tender ties, Awake this day my plaintive sighs, My heart within me almost dies, At thocht of leaving Fiunary. But I must leave those happy vales, See how they fill, the spreading sails, Adieu, adieu, my native dales, Fareweel, fareweel tae Fiunary.

Ca' the Ewes 04:27
Ca' the ewes tae the knowes, Ca' them whaur the heather grows, Ca' them whaur the burnie rowes, My bonnie dearie. Hark, the mavis' evening sang, Sounding Clouden's woods amang, Then a-faulding let us gang, My bonnie dearie. We'll gae down by Clouden side, Thro' the hazels, spreading wide, O'er the waves that sweetly glide, Tae the moon sae clearly. Ghaist nor bogle shalt thou fear – Thou'rt tae love and heav'n sae dear, Nocht o’ ill may come thee near, My bonnie dearie. Fair and lovely as thou art, Thou hast stown my very heart; I maun die - but canna part, My bonnie dearie.

How often hunting, the highest hilltops, I scan the ocean, I sail tae sea, Wilt come tonight love, wilt come tomorrow, Wilt ever come love, tae comfort me. Fhear a’ bhàta no horo eil'e, Fhear a’ bhàta no horo eil'e, Fhear a’ bhàta no horo eil'e, Oh fare thee well love, where e'er ye be. They call thee fickle, they call thee false one, And seek tae change me, but all in vain, For thou art my dream, Yet through the dark night, And every morning I watch the main. There's not a hamlet, too well I know it, Where you go wandering or set a while, But all the old folk you win with talking, And charm it's maidens with song and smile. Dost thou remember the promise made me, The tartan plaidie, the silken gown, The ring of gold with thy hair and portrait, That gown and ring I will never own.

I am a poor wayfaring stranger, Traveling through this world of woe, But there's no sickness, no toil nor danger, In that bright land to which I go. I'm going there to see my father, I'm going there no more to roam, I'm only going over Jordan, I'm only going over home. I know dark clouds will gather 'round me, I know my way is rough and steep, But golden fields lie just before me, Where men redeemed shall ever sleep. I'm going there to see my mother, She said she'd meet me when I come, I'm only going over Jordan, I'm only going over home.

I am a young sailor, my story is sad, Though once I was carefree, And a brave sailor lad, I courted a lassie by night and by day, Oh but now she has left me, And sailed far away. Oh, if I was a blackbird, Could whistle and sing, I'd follow the vessel, My true love sails in, And in the top riggin', I would there build my nest, And I'd flutter my wings, O'er her lily white breast. Or if I was a scholar, And could handle the pen, One secret love letter, To my true love I'd send, And tell of my sorrow, My grief and my pain, Since she's gone and left me , In yon flowery glen. I sailed o'er the ocean, My fortune to seek, Though I missed her caress, And her kiss on my cheek, I returned and I told her, My love was still warm, But she turned away lightly, And great was her scorn. I offered to take her, To Donnybrook Fair, And to buy her fine ribbons, To tie up her hair, I offered to marry, And to stay by her side, But she says in the morning, She sails with the tide. My parents, they chide me, And will not agree, Saying that me and my false love, Married should never be, Oh, then let them deprive me, Let them do what they will, While there's breath in my body, She's the one that I love still.

about

An indisputable contender for a “Folk Album of the Year” accolade, “Storyteller” is a masterpiece. ~ Dmitry Epstein, DMME.net

"The Storyteller albums by Walter Holland are wonderful! There are deep Scottish roots in the Patterson clan, so both albums resonate deeply within me. Walter's latest two albums simply overflow with heart, soul and music enabling the listener to experience real human emotions. In this technological age, it seems we've lost touch with the simple pleasures of life. "Storyteller Part II" and its predecessor feature great music, played by musicians who truly were able to conjure up amazing musical magic on these albums." ~ Archie Patterson

A completely tender folk album from British, Irish, and Scottish traditions, very far from Walter's previous output of electronic and experimental genre music, from his Amber Route days or former solos, except for 'Ride On', which uses transfixing synthesizers to give lush liquid background to Walter's almost Robert Fisher (Willard Grant Conspiracy) vocals. This is a beautiful, often haunting recording that soothes and calms the soul. It feels like the songs were in Holland most of his life.
So we have this sentimental set of songs, all done with such care and gentleness. Based on the elegance of these treasures, it is hard not to listen to it over and over. Need some tranquility in your life? Then this is your album. This CD is forever in my collection now. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ~ © Lee Henderson
